Happy Holidays!

From all of us at IHLA we wish you and your families and communities a safe and healthy holiday season. May the new year be filled with peace, great learning experiences and good memories.

Remember that until further notice the IHLA office is now closed. All contact information can be obtained by emailing us at edmontonihla@gmail.com. Also, the IHLA website will undergo a renovation during the holidays. We will communicate with you about the new site once it is ready!

Happy Holidays Everyone!

The IHLA office and board wishes you all a great and serene holiday season. We know you are all on your way to the last few classes of the fall of 2011 and your students must be very excited for the holiday break.

We thank all people who have participated in our great sessions we offered during this fall. We summarize the list below for you to all review.

  1. Wiki Spaces Session Part I - computer lab workshop - this was offered twice, on September 29 and on October 13, 2011.
  2. Wiki Spaces session Part II - computer lab workshop - this was offered on October 13, 2011.
  3. Spoken Interactions two-part workshop, with Dr. Olenka Bilash - This was offered on October 30 and November 5, 2011.
  4. Vokis, Audioplas and Google Maps - computer lab workshop - offered on November 3, 2011.
  5. The 2012 MLD IHLA school meeting - held on October 6, 2011.
  6. The IHLA Heritage Schools Portfolio Project workshops, with Carlos Soler Montes, from the Instituto Cervantes in Albaquerque, New Mexico (sessions were held in May, August and November 2011).
  7. Humanistic Approaches to Language Learning - a workshop offered at the IHLA office on November 26, 2011.
  8. The Magic of Podcasting - computer lab workshop - offered on December 1, 2011.

We are hoping to offer a great number of new sessions and leadership programs for the winter and spring of 2012. Stay tuned for more information about new sessions.

IMPORTANT NOTICE
The IHLA office is in the process of moving and renovating its spaces. This will affect the way in which our school members and individual members will be able to communicate and stay in touch with IHLA.

We will do everything possible in our power to respond o your needs and questions promptly via email. There will not be anyone responding to phone calls or faxing until the move has taken place and we communicate with you about the changes.

BILASH - Attend this two-parts workshop with Dr. Bilash, and gain a wealth of strategies and tips, increase your bank of activities for spoken interactions in your language classes. This workshop is presented in two separate sessions - you must register and attend both to receive a certificate of participation.  Session part one will be presented on Sunday, October 30, from 1:30 - 5:30 p.m. at the IHLA office.  Session two will be presented on Saturday, November 5, from 2:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the IHLA office.

Learn to use speaking and listening comprehension tools to work with any activity with your students.   2. Making Magic with Podcasts - a Technology Session - this workshop will take you to the magic and ease of use of podcasts to teach second and heritage languages in any setting. Leave the session having set up your own podcast channel and beginning to broadcasts for your students. This session will be presented on December 1, 2011 from 6:00 to 9:30 p.m. at Enterprise Square (10230 Jasper Ave) - Link to site map.

  3. GREAT, TRIED-AND-TRUE IDEAS ABOUT PLANNING FOR THE HL AND THE SL CLASSROOM - This workshop will outline basic and really effective strategies for planning for your language classroom. Specifically useful for instructors and teachers who are looking for ways to make their curriculum work. This session will be presented on November 12, 2011 from 2:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the IHLA office.

Students think and solve problems using language from a variety of angles, including visual support, drama, emotional intelligence and more. This session will be presented on November 26, 2011 from 2:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the IHLA office.

September 2011 - A New School Year

Happy New School Year to Everyone! WELCOME TO THE FALL PD SESSIONS CALENDAR AND REGISTRATION LINKS!


 

We at IHLA wish all our member schools a super great new school year! Hope you had a wonderful and restful summer. Please review our plans and updates for the coming fall season. We have reminders, details on activities completed over the summer and PD opportunities for IHLA members and teachers of second languages who wish to participate.

Sessions will be offered with a minimum of 8 registrants (individual sessions).

REGISTRATION FOR EVENTS FOR IHLA MEMBER SCHOOLS ONLY
  1. IHLA Member Schools Membership Registration  - ALL IHLA member schools must complete their registration online and pay the fee for the 2011-2012 school year. Remember: to participate in all IHLA activities, as a school or with your instructors, your school MUST be a member in good standing.

  2. 9TH ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY SCHOOL REGISTRATION - IHLA member schools in good standing who wish to participate in the 9th Annual International Mother Language Day, must register online and attend the first school meeting for orientation and details on the event. The event will take place on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at the Italian Cultural Centre.

    Schools MUST HAVE PAID THE CURRENT YEAR MEMBERSHIP TO REGISTER AND PARTICIPATE IN THE EVENT.

    The orientation meeting will take place on Thursday, October 6, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. at the IHLA office.

  3. IHLA YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAM - This program is open to IHLA member school students who wish to use their creativity and organization skills to help us run the 9th Annual International Mother Language Day. You will become part of a special group of youth leaders who will run sections of the event, from creating the program for the day, to communicating with schools, working with technology and tools to create exciting media support for the special community event. This program is open to students from grade 8 to 12 who are currently attending an IHLA member school program. Register online - the first two sessions will be on October  6 and November 10, 2011 - at the IHLA office, from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.  The program will provide you with a detailed account of your leadership roles and allows to gain up to 40 hours of volunteer work which will be officially documented by IHLA staff.

    We have up to 5 more spaces for this special group initiative. Hurry up and register.

August 2011

Dear IHLA friends and users,

this is our update for activities and events happening in the month of August.

IHLA WIKI PAGES SESSION - AUGUST 25 - CONFIRMED
We are happy to inform you that the Wiki Spaces session will go on in a special computer lab at the University of Alberta, Faculty of Extension, on August 25, 2011 from 6:00 to 9:30 p.m.

Those of you who have registered have already received your confirmation email. The registrations are now closed - however if you are still interested in the session, feel free to email us at: edmontonihla@gmail.com .

IHLA SPOKEN INTERACTIONS - SESSION WITH DR. BILASH - CANCELED - TO BE RESCHEDULED

The session about oral interactions with Dr. Olenka Bilash has been canceled for lack of registrations. All people who have registred to the session should have received a cancellation notice email message.

We plan to reschedule this session in the fall. Stay tuned.

IHLA PORTFOLIO PROJECT - UPDATE

The IHLA schools who attended the Portfolio Project have completed a very fruitful session. We have invited them all to participate in the special Portfolio Wiki Page. We hope these schools are completing their tasks. Stay tuned for access to more documents and the date to meet again for this special project - this project is now open only to schools who have attended the first session. We are happy to be working with Carlos Soler Montes of the Aula Cervantes in Calgary.

IHLA MLD 2012 LEADERSHIP PROGRAM FOR YOUTH - STILL TIME TO REGISTER

We have had a few students interested in this great opportunity for students from grade 8 to 12 who are attending IHLA member schools, to join a leadership course to organize the upcoming 9th Annual International Mother Language Day Event, which will take place on February 25, 2012.

Students interested in this special program still have time until August 15, 2011 to register online. We will set a preliminary meeting at the end of the summer to get things going.

June 2011

For the month of June IHLA has a few important dates to remind you all about. You can check these dates on the calendar as well.

  1. June 6, 2011 - the IHLA AGM - at the IHLA office, from 6:00 to 9:30 p.m. - If you are an IHLA member in good standing, you have received a package with important information about the AGM. Leticia called your school contact and you should have been able to confirm who will attend on behalf of your school. The AGM is a great opportunity to share a bit about what your schools did in the past year and begin to plan for the new year.

    IF YOUR SCHOOL DID NOT ATTEND THE AGM - PLEASE RETURN THE COPIES OF THE CONSTITUTION TO THE IHLA OFFICE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

  2. June 13 - last meeting of the IHLA Board - for Board members only.

  3. June 18 - First session for schools interest in participating in the IHLA Portfolio Project (information will be shared during the IHLA AGM). You can find more details at the flyer on the link below and you can register online at:
