September 2011 - A New School Year

Happy New School Year to Everyone! WELCOME TO THE FALL PD SESSIONS CALENDAR AND REGISTRATION LINKS!


 

We at IHLA wish all our member schools a super great new school year! Hope you had a wonderful and restful summer. Please review our plans and updates for the coming fall season. We have reminders, details on activities completed over the summer and PD opportunities for IHLA members and teachers of second languages who wish to participate.

Read on and register for the sessions you are interested in. If you have any questions please email us at edmontonihla@gmail.com.    Make sure you provide us with correct contact information - confirmation and or cancellation of sessions will only occur via email. 
Sessions will be offered with a minimum of 8 registrants (individual sessions).

REGISTRATION FOR EVENTS FOR IHLA MEMBER SCHOOLS ONLY
  1. IHLA Member Schools Membership Registration  - ALL IHLA member schools must complete their registration online and pay the fee for the 2011-2012 school year. Click on the link below to register online and then send in your cheque to Leticia at the IHLA office. Remember: to participate in all IHLA activities, as a school or with your instructors, your school MUST be a member in good standing.

  2. 9TH ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY SCHOOL REGISTRATION - IHLA member schools in good standing who wish to participate in the 9th Annual International Mother Language Day, must register online and attend the first school meeting for orientation and details on the event. The event will take place on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at the Italian Cultural Centre.

    Schools MUST HAVE PAID THE CURRENT YEAR MEMBERSHIP TO REGISTER AND PARTICIPATE IN THE EVENT.

    The orientation meeting will take place on Thursday, October 6, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. at the IHLA office.

  3. IHLA YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAM - This program is open to IHLA member school students who wish to use their creativity and organization skills to help us run the 9th Annual International Mother Language Day. You will become part of a special group of youth leaders who will run sections of the event, from creating the program for the day, to communicating with schools, working with technology and tools to create exciting media support for the special community event. This program is open to students from grade 8 to 12 who are currently attending an IHLA member school program. Register online - the first two sessions will be on October  6 and November 10, 2011 - at the IHLA office, from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.  The program will provide you with a detailed account of your leadership roles and allows to gain up to 40 hours of volunteer work which will be officially documented by IHLA staff.

    We have up to 5 more spaces for this special group initiative. Hurry up and register.

  4. PORTFOLIO PROJECT SESSION - Session three set to run on November 2, 2011 at the IHLA office - from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. - this session is open only to portfolio project schools.

REGISTRATIONS FOR PD SESSIONS OPEN TO IHLA TEACHERS, INSTRUCTORS AND VOLUNTEERS AS WELL AS SECOND LANGUAGE CERTIFIED TEACHERS

  1. Using WIKI SPACES for Second Language Classes Workshop Level I - Completed! Thanks to all who attended!


  2. Using Wiki Spaces for Second Language Classes - Level II Workshop - this is a follow up to the first session. Register for this session to learn how to embed and work with videos right into your wiki pages and learn how to create and embed screencasts. This session will be presented on October 13, 2011 from 6:00 to 9:30 p.m. at Enterprise Square (10230 Jasper Ave) - Link to site map.

  3. VOKIS, AUDIOPALS AND GOOGLE MAPS - A technology session to learn how to use interactive tools online to make your second language classes even more exciting. Learn to use speaking and listening comprehension tools to work with any activity with your students. This session will be presented on November 3, 2011 from 6:00 to 9:30 p.m. at Enterprise Square (10230 Jasper Ave) - Link to site map.

  4. Making Magic with Podcasts - a Technology Session - this workshop will take you to the magic and ease of use of podcasts to teach second and heritage languages in any setting. Leave the session having set up your own podcast channel and beginning to broadcasts for your students. This session will be presented on December 1, 2011 from 6:00 to 9:30 p.m. at Enterprise Square (10230 Jasper Ave) - Link to site map.

  5. USING CALENDARS AND IMAGES TO TEACH LANGUAGES AND LEARN ABOUT CULTURES - Canceled.
  6. GREAT, TRIED-AND-TRUE IDEAS ABOUT PLANNING FOR THE HL AND THE SL CLASSROOM - This workshop will outline basic and really effective strategies for planning for your language classroom. Specifically useful for instructors and teachers who are looking for ways to make their curriculum work. This session will be presented on November 12, 2011 from 2:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the IHLA office.

  7. HUMANISTIC APPROACHES TO LANGUAGE TEACHING - this session takes the four language skills and presents a variety of different approaches to teaching them, using a humanistic perspective. Students think and solve problems using language from a variety of angles, including visual support, drama, emotional intelligence and more. This session will be presented on November 26, 2011 from 2:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the IHLA office.

  8. SPOKEN INTERACTIONS WITH DR. BILASH - Attend this two-parts workshop with Dr. Bilash, and gain a wealth of strategies and tips, increase your bank of activities for spoken interactions in your language classes. This workshop is presented in two separate sessions - you must register and attend both to receive a certificate of participation.  Session part one will be presented on Sunday, October 30, from 1:30 - 5:30 p.m. at the IHLA office.  Session two will be presented on Saturday, November 5, from 2:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the IHLA office.
